Safe Space Launceston
Providing stability for people experiencing homelessness - a temporary, safe place to sleep
Safe Space
The aim of Safe Space is to provide stability for people facing crisis, alongside care and support to help them consider what may be their next step.
Safe Space offers a temporary, safe place to sleep on a night by night basis. The service also provides basic needs such as showers, laundry and meals.
Safe Space is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. The service can currently house 33 people each night with a range of different sleeping arrangements including one to four people per room, larger capacity dormitory style rooms and dog friendly rooms. There are separate areas to provide appropriate arrangements for different genders.
In the last year, Safe Space has:
Provided 8397 bed nights (5894 males, 2503 females)
Accommodated 283 individuals
Achieved Over 50 positive outcomes in 2024 alone (residents obtaining the residential, financial, or recovery outcome they identified)
More Than Just a Bed
Safe Space Launceston does more than provide somewhere to sleep. Through this service, people experiencing homelessness can:
Safely spend the night
Access hot, nutritious meals, service information, showers/laundry facilities and support during the day.
Access phone service (as many services are moving to tele services)
Access the Internet (as many services are also offering tele-conferencing)
Store belongings safely
Access case management and coaching – for achieving better outcomes and to transition to long term accommodation.
Access the opportunity for social interaction and the ability to establish connections (moving towards formally linking in with the Housing Connect and other allied support systems)
Enjoy recreation options – TV and games
Access community outreach – people who aren’t ready to engage with the SSL service but still need help can be supported to make choices towards better outcomes.
Contact the service directly, via Housing Connect or other support organisations to check on bed availability.
Safe Space is fully funded by Homes Tasmania
